Our Raw Materials

In partnership with our customers, our ambition is to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that maximise the potential of the potting soil or substrate every day. Our specialism is not limited to simply supplying the right substrates. Every day, our team works on improving existing substrates and developing new growing media and applications to optimally support our customers in their goal of achieving the very best results.

Our raw materials

Each type of crop is different and requires a specific blend of raw materials that support growth and result in successful yields.

Our extremely wide range of raw materials and substrate blends is continuously tested and analysed. The new insights revealed by our research enable us to continually improve our products and implement innovations. So we can serve, advise and supply our customers in the best possible way.

WE GROW TOGETHER

The main raw materials used in our substrates include:

  • Hortifibre. This wood fibre gives the substrate a more open structure, with good air permeability to encourage strong root development.
  • Basis BioMix. This efficient raw material has the right biological composition to promote resilient, robust crops.
  • Rice husk considerably aerates the structure of peat-rich substrates. This ensures good root development, resulting in strong and resilient plants.
  • Swedish sphagnum peat ensures substrate properties including a good moisture balance
  • Bark is a stable material that is not susceptible to shrinkage. It contributes stability to the structure of substrates.
  • Block peat helps achieve the right moisture balance.
  • Coconut creates an open, airy substrate and ensures a good moisture balance
  • Perlite has good water and air retention properties and has a positive effect on water absorption.
  • Vermiculite improves water distribution and water absorption.
  • Pumice increases the pH.
  • Garden peat has effects including lower acidity and ensures a good moisture balance.

Our sustainability classes

All our substrates are categorised into a sustainability class that also states their eco-footprint calculation. This gives our customers continuous insight into the sustainability and circularity of a substrate and the corresponding properties. When our substrates are certified, we examine the origin and type of organic raw materials and fertilisers in addition to CO2 and peat content.

Four different classes are used: A, B, C and D. The sustainability class of a substrate is determined based on a set of pre-defined standards. By taking these criteria into account when formulating a substrate blend, we can produce a product with the desired sustainability class.

A Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 50% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials
  • No inorganic fertilizers

CO2 Footprint Class A
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

B Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 15% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials

CO2 Footprint Class B
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • Maximum 65% peat
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class C
(50-150kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • More than 65% peat (unlimited)
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class D
(70-350kg eq/ENm3)
