Bark

Bark is a residual product from the timber industry. It is often used a mulch and a raw material for substrates.

We use bark that comes in a various fractions, ranging from fine to coarse. Depending on which fraction is used, the bark will hold more or less water. The coarser the fraction, the lighter and airier the structure of the bark. Bark has a positive effect on the susceptibility of the substrate to shrinkage. It is stable, not susceptible to shrinkage and adds stability and structure to substrates. Bark is often the main component in substrates used for orchids. However, it is also increasingly being used in regular substrates for segments including tree nurseries and pot plants.

At Lensli, we use specially selected barks from Europe, including the Pinus pinaster. Some of the bark processed into substrate at Lensli is sourced from suppliers with the FSC quality label. Sourcing from FSC-certified suppliers helps protect irreplaceable forests for future generations and is one of the ways we contribute to increasing the sustainability of the substrates used in horticulture. At Lensli, we have our own bark production site in Sweden and regular sources of bark in Portugal and Spain.

The bark is harvested from the tree, shredded and screened in the country of origin. Processing separates and removes the coarse fragments, twigs and white wood. The bark is then transported to our factory site in Bleiswijk for further processing. Some of the bark is sieved again in our vibrating screen unit until the required fraction size is obtained. Other bark is screened into certain fractions in the country of origin and used directly. Coarse bark from Portugal and Spain is also treated with steam to ensure compliance with the applicable export regulations.

Screening equipment

The screening equipment installed in 2014 is used to separate and remove fine particles from the raw material so that only pure bark is left behind. The screen also separates the bark into large and smaller fragments so that, eventually, material of the same size (fractions) is created.

By reducing the size margins of these fractions, fragments of bark of equal, uniform size are obtained. This improves homogeneity when the bark is used in substrates.

Range of fractions

We offer five bark fractions, each with its own specific properties and advantages:

  • Structure bark (1-5 MM)
  • Mini bark 1 (6-8 MM)
  • Mini bark 2 ( 8-10 MM )
  • Bark 1 (12-14 MM)
  • Bark 2 (14-18 MM)

Insight into sustainability and eco-footprint

The themes of sustainability and environmentally-conscious cultivation are gaining traction throughout the horticultural sector. To support growers in this transition, all our substrates are categorised into a sustainability class. This class gives our customers continuous insight into the sustainability and circularity of a substrate and the corresponding properties. This classification system not only aims to offer CO2 and peat-free substrates, it also examines the origin and type of organic raw materials and fertilisers.

Four different classes are used: A, B, C and D. The sustainability class of a substrate is determined based on a set of pre-defined standards. By taking these criteria into account when formulating a substrate blend, we can produce a product with the desired sustainability class.

The table below shows the different classes and the applicable criteria ranging from the peat percentage to increasing use of circular raw materials.

A Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 50% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials
  • No inorganic fertilizers

CO2 Footprint Class A
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

B Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 15% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials

CO2 Footprint Class B
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • Maximum 65% peat
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class C
(50-150kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • More than 65% peat (unlimited)
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class D
(70-350kg eq/ENm3)
