Roel Breukers is co-owner of B&B Plant in Lottum. B&B Plant specializes in the cultivation of exclusive shrubs on mini-stems. The company consists of 4,5 hectares of container field and 1,5 hectares of foil/greenhouse, on which they produce 350.000 mini-stem shrubs annually. B&B Plant currently uses Herbaedeck BM to cover the pots of the shrubs on stems against weeds and moss.
"In the past, we tried other mulches to cover the surface of the pots, but with the plants outdoors, the topping soils ended up with the same properties as potting soil. So weed seeds were still able to germinate, which is precisely what we didn't want! The absence of weeds and moss is the most important thing. The shrubs also look far more attractive now.
We actually started using Herbaedeck on all pots right after the first test. In the first few years, this was Herbaedeck HBR and we have now switched to Herbaedeck BM. Herbaedeck reduces weed pressure and we no longer have any problems with moss. In addition, the top layer of the pots remains less moist, which means weeds and moss have less chance to germinate. Ultimately, this also means labor savings.
