High-quality orchid substrate

We set the benchmark for orchid substrates thanks to our many years of experience, extensive knowledge of orchid growing and our position as a market leader. We have developed a good, uniform substrate based on bark that offers guaranteed quality. We source our bark from Portugal, where it is steam treated and cleaned at our processing site before being transported to our production site in Bleiswijk. On arrival, the bark is stored in our special closed system to guarantee uniform quality. Using a closed system also excludes insects and prevents contamination by weed seeds.

Bark is expected to remain an important raw material for orchid substrate due to its excellent drainage properties, quick drying action and good aeration of the substrate for strong root growth. It is also very versatile and easy to process. The stable properties of bark make it ideal as a substrate for long cultivation cycles. Bark offers the precise properties required by these varieties of plants.

In addition to bark, the substrate also contains moisture-binding raw materials such as sphagnum peat, coconut chips and stable peat products. Thanks to the high quality of our substrate combined with our specialist knowledge, we have acquired an impressive customer base in the Netherlands, the United States (California), South America (Mexico, Brazil and Colombia) and Asia (Taiwan).

Stable, airy and clean

In addition to our processing site in Portugal, we have additional screening capacity at our Bleiswijk (NL) site to produce various bark fractions. This means we can offer our growers a wide choice. Our bark can be widely used in many applications and is suitable for different pot sizes and methods. We apply strict quality requirements for cambium, white wood and other soiling. This is monitored externally by RHP.

Range of fractions

We offer five bark fractions, each with its own specific properties and advantages:

  • Structure bark (1-5 MM)
  • Mini bark 1 (6-10 MM)
  • Bark 1 (10-14 MM)
  • Bark 2 (14-18 MM)

Customised fertilisers

We have developed a range of dedicated orchid fertilisers, such as HC mix and Orchid Start-Up. HC mix is our own organic fertiliser mixture with a higher nitrogen content and controlled release. Orchid Start-Up is a complete NPK fertiliser including trace elements. The formulation has been balanced specifically to suit orchids and provide them with the best possible start.

Other fertilisers can be added to the formula to suit your specific needs. Curious to learn more? Contact us!

Insight into sustainability and eco-footprint

The themes of sustainability and environmentally-conscious cultivation are gaining traction throughout the horticultural sector. To support growers in this transition, all our substrates are categorised into a sustainability class. This class gives our customers continuous insight into the sustainability and circularity of a substrate and the corresponding properties. This classification system not only aims to offer CO2 and peat-free substrates, it also examines the origin and type of organic raw materials and fertilisers.

Four different classes are used: A, B, C and D. The sustainability class of a substrate is determined based on a set of pre-defined standards. By taking these criteria into account when formulating a substrate blend, we can produce a product with the desired sustainability class.

The table below shows the different classes and the applicable criteria ranging from the peat percentage to increasing use of circular raw materials.

A Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 50% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials
  • No inorganic fertilizers

CO2 Footprint Class A
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

B Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 15% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials

CO2 Footprint Class B
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • Maximum 65% peat
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class C
(50-150kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • More than 65% peat (unlimited)
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class D
(70-350kg eq/ENm3)
