Proven successful formulas result in balanced cultivation

Founded on more than 115 years of experience, we can rely on formulas that have proven their value in practice and form a basis for new applications. We can therefore offer a suitable, effective substrate for every grower, crop or situation. Our substrate can be used for all the different crops in the bedding plant segment. This includes cushion chrysanthemums, container plants, hanging pots, large pots, small pots and even small trays. Our diverse range of customers and our practical experience have combined to create valuable knowledge and expertise of various different types of bedding plants and growers.

Airy, homogeneous substrate

Similar to all our other substrates, the proven substrate for bedding plants can be formulated to suit the specific needs of growers, plants and the situation. The main raw material used in substrates for bedding plants is peat. However, we can now offer a wide range of alternatives and can advise and support growers in transitioning to substrates with less peat.

We perform extensive research into new, renewable raw materials. This means we can offer our customers a range of options to reduce the use of peat. For example, rice husks, coconut, bark and wood fibre.

We consider our customers to be our partners. We consult and work together to achieve the very best results. We continually explore ways of adapting the substrate to boost its effectiveness.

Balanced cultivation

Each type of crop is different and requires a specific blend of raw materials that support growth and result in successful yields.

A selection of the main raw materials used by Lensli in the bedding plant segment are:

  • Swedish sphagnum peat and various other peat fractions. This ensures properties including a good moisture balance.
  • Garden peat and Baltic sphagnum peat. These materials create a good moisture and nutrient buffer.
  • Rice husk. This considerably aerates the structure of peat-rich substrates. It ensures good root development, resulting in strong and resilient plants.
  • Perlite. This material can hold a lot of water and air and has a positive influence on aeration and water absorption, which is important for plant growth.
  • Hortifibre. This wood fibre gives the substrate a more open structure, with good air permeability to encourage strong root development.
  • Basis BioMix. This efficient raw material has the right biological composition to promote resilient; robust crops.
  • Bark. This is a stable material that is not susceptible to shrinkage. It contributes stability to the structure of substrates.
  • Coconut. This ensure good moisture management.

Benefits and properties

The benefits of our bedding plants substrates:

  • Extensive knowledge of the entire bedding plant market, our products and raw materials.
  • Very airy substrate thanks to the addition of raw materials including rice husks.
  • Various peat fractions available.
  • Proven substrate based on organic, circular raw materials, with a good, proven performance in practice.
  • Continuous product development and innovation.
  • Homogeneous substrates ensure constant, guaranteed quality and uniform plant growth.
  • Purity. We ensure our substrate is clean so no pests, diseases or weeds can damage your plants.
  • Our substrates help growers increase their sustainability and achieve the smallest possible footprint. The more sustainable raw materials are used, the smaller the footprint.
  • All raw materials are RHP certified, so safe to use.
  • Personal approach, with a focus on cooperation and partnership.
  • Available in various types of packaging. Choose from: Bulk, big bales, big bags and 45L bags.

Insight into sustainability and eco-footprint

The themes of sustainability and environmentally-conscious cultivation are gaining traction throughout the horticultural sector. To support growers in this transition, all our substrates are categorised into a sustainability class. This class gives our customers continuous insight into the sustainability and circularity of a substrate and the corresponding properties. This classification system not only aims to offer CO2 and peat-free substrates, it also examines the origin and type of organic raw materials and fertilisers.

Four different classes are used: A, B, C and D. The sustainability class of a substrate is determined based on a set of pre-defined standards. By taking these criteria into account when formulating a substrate blend, we can produce a product with the desired sustainability class.

The table below shows the different classes and the applicable criteria ranging from the peat percentage to increasing use of circular raw materials.

A Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 50% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials
  • No inorganic fertilizers

CO2 Footprint Class A
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

B Class

  • 100% Peat free
  • At least 15% green raw materials
  • Maximum 35% mineral raw materials

CO2 Footprint Class B
(<60kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • Maximum 65% peat
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class C
(50-150kg eq/ENm3)

Class

  • More than 65% peat (unlimited)
  • Exclusively RPP peat

CO2 Footprint Class D
(70-350kg eq/ENm3)
